NYC Residents Complain Most About Noise in Warmer Months; Heat Issues in Colder Months

Heatmap
SOURCE: NYC Open Data, 311 Calls

Theme Day 14 #heatmap

  • NYC Open Data records hundreds of categories of NYC 311 calls. This graph displays the top 10 most common complaint types by call volume.
  • There’s strong seasonality with 311 calls, where complaints associated with heating or hot water are most frequent in colder months (January being the worst for both categories), and complaints related to noise are most frequent in warmer months when more people are outside.
  • Because New York City is so densely populated, and multi-dwelling units are quite common, it would make sense why residential noise has been complained about the most throughout the calendar year.

Among Nuclear Weapon States, Russia Leads the Pack with Most Weapon Developments

Theme Day 15 #historical

  • The Nuclear Weapons Systems Project records data pertaining to the development of nuclear weapons to guide nuclear policy.
  • This data, however, does not reflect actual warhead units. The amount of individual nuclear weapons is beyond the scope of this data set. It’s also important to note that there are more countries beyond the five nuclear states that have arsenals of nuclear weapons.
  • This data set helps highlight the historical progress of nuclear weapons systems development, noting that the U.S. was the first to begin development in the 1940s, followed soon after by Russia and the U.K.
  • In terms of weapon systems variation, you can see a bit of an “arms race” between Russia and the U.S., where both countries spent earlier decades developing unique weapon types.
  • While four of the five nuclear states saw a slowdown in weapon systems development by the 1980s, China developed most of its systems in the 2010s, likely because of its later start.

United Nation Countries Cluster into Three Voting Communities

Theme Day 17 #networks

  • The United Nations represents our best attempt at international cooperation and peacemaking through institutional diplomacy.
  • Voting patterns at the UN provide insight into how countries want to be perceived on the international stage. Who do they vote with? Who do they vote against? Where do alliances form? Where is conflict?
  • Our network and cluster analysis of recent UN voting patterns suggests several distinct voting blocs. The West emerges as a key voting bloc, but other interesting voting blocs emerge among non-aligned countries.
  • Importantly, for many smaller countries, their geographic regional peers are their closest vote partners. As the adage goes, all politics is local.

Among the Busiest U.S. Airports, Charlotte Douglas Has Experienced the Least Complaints per Passenger

SOURCE: Complaints from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), 2015-2022; Passenger data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), 2015-2022.

Theme Day 20 #correlation

  • The analysis began by examining U.S. airports with the highest number of traveler complaints recorded by the TSA. Initially, the data set covered 2019 through 2022, but extending the timeframe provided a more accurate picture, especially considering the impact of COVID-19 on air travel.
  • We reframed the data to focus on the top 20 busiest airports instead of the top 20 airports with the most complaints. This adjustment aimed to better assess airport performance. Consequently, Charlotte Douglas, the best-performing busiest airport, was included in the data set.
  • The number of TSA complaints was compared to the number of boarding travelers for each airport, offering a more precise performance evaluation. For instance, Los Angeles Airport (LAX) had the most complaints overall but is also the second busiest U.S. airport. Judging LAX solely on complaints would be misleading; when factoring in traveler numbers, LAX performs better than average.

The AI Revolution Began Years Before ChatGPT

Bar chart

Theme Day 26 #AI

  • Analysis of SEC filings suggest corporate America began the AI pivot more than five years ago.
  • While 2023 may have been the year that ChatGPT dominated headlines, our analysis of annual reports filed to the Securities and Exchange Commission suggests that the business world caught on to A.I. well before then.
  • For the last few decades, discussion of artificial intelligence in annual reports was dominated primarily by technology and healthcare companies.
  • But 2017 represented a watershed moment for AI. Google’s seminal transformers paper and advancements by other technology companies made neural networks more accessible and useful to larger audiences.
  • Six years later, AI has become an essential part of how more than 1,000 public companies across all sectors communicate their value proposition to investors.
